How Often Should You Groom Your Dog? A Simple Guide by Coat Type

One of the questions we hear most at Chula Pawz is simple: how often does my dog actually need grooming? The honest answer is that it depends on your dog’s coat — but here’s a guide you can actually use.

By coat type

Long or curly coats (Poodles, Doodles, Shih Tzus, Yorkies): every 4–6 weeks. These coats grow continuously and mat quickly without regular care.

Double coats (Huskies, German Shepherds, Golden Retrievers): every 6–8 weeks, with de-shedding treatments during spring and fall coat blows.

Short coats (Labs, Beagles, Boxers): every 8–12 weeks for a bath, nail trim, and ear cleaning — they don’t need haircuts, but they still need maintenance.

Between appointments

Brushing at home a few times a week keeps tangles away and helps you spot skin issues early. Here in Saint George, our dry desert climate can also dry out skin and coats, so regular conditioning baths make a real difference — and after a dusty trail walk or a trip to the river, a quick rinse goes a long way.

If you’re not sure what schedule fits your dog, just ask — we’re happy to recommend a routine based on their breed, coat, and lifestyle.
